Profile and Background
Global Financial Investments Company was established in July 1997 following the flotation of 2.4 million shares, or 40 per cent of its equity. The main activities are brokerage and investment banking. Its shares were listed in mid-October 1997 and went to an immediate premium.
The company started operations on 1 September 1997. Its earnings for the period to the end of 1998 were hit by the slump in share prices on the MSM in 1998. The company lost RO 142,577 ($370,330) on the sale of investments and took provisions of RO 900,000 ($2.
3 million) against doubtful debts. Net profits for the period were RO 1.2 million ($3.1 million). Profits fell by 55 per cent in 1999 to RO 532,000 million ($1.38 million). Nevertheless, it was one of the few financial services companies to report a profit in the year.
The balance sheet showed a substantial reduction in activities and a drastic reduction in funding from banks.
