Profile and Background
Muscat Thread Mills Company (MTM) was established in the summer of 1996 to manufacture polyester thread for local use and export. Its founding shareholders include Oman's leading clothing manufacturer Muscat Garments Industry (MGI), which has taken a direct 5 per cent stake in the venture.
The company began trial production in 1997 and has a capacity of 300,000 cones a month. The company says there is potential in the local market and plans to double its production capacity to meet growing demand.
Work to expand the plant was due for completion in early 2000.Revenues in August-December 1997 were RO 212,000 ($550,650), resulting in a net loss of RO 22,000 ($57,140). However, a near five-fold increase in sales to RO 993,956 ($257,836) in full-year 1998 moved the company into the black.
Sales advanced, but the company reported a loss in 1999.
