National Detergent Company manufactures soaps, washing powder, washing-up liquid and other cleaning products under brand names such as Ayam, Bahar, Site and Wafir.It has a good reputation for quality and in 1995 became the first detergent company in the GCC to be awarded an ISO 9001 certificate.

It inaugurated a modernized powder plant at the beginning of 1996 and has penetrated new markets in the CIS and Africa. Increased competition from local and foreign producers left the company struggling to increase sales between 1995-97 - turnover grew by just 6.

4 per cent. However, cost-cuts ensured profits keep growing. In 1997, earnings were up 81 per cent. In 1999, sales fell by 7 per cent. Net profit after tax rose by 14 per cent and this allowed an increased dividend pay-out.
