Profile and Background
National Rice Mills was established in May 1996 to process and package imported rice. It is the first company of its kind in the sultanate. The company's founders include local companies, individuals and pension funds.
It began trial processing of rice during October 1997 and started commercial processing and trading in January 1998. It produces pure white rice from brown rice imported from Pakistan and India. Its plant in Rusayl has a capacity of 25,000 tonnes a year (t/y) of rice, which will be sold locally and exported to Iran and Yemen.
Demand for such rice is estimated to be 1.6 million t/y in Iran and 300,000 t/y in Yemen. Oman imports about 100,000 t/y.The company recorded net profits of RO 69,779 ($181,244) in 1998, its first year of operations, on turnover of RO 12.
