Profile and Background
A milk and vegetable producer, Oman Agriculture Development Company was established in 1990. Its previously unproductive and loss-making agricultural division moved into the black for the first time in four years in the financial year ending 30 April 1997, with fresh vegetable production at its Al-Shams farm in Sohar increasing to 5,310 tonnes from 3,258 tonnes.
Sales rose by 16 per cent to RO 581,000 ($1.5 million) and productivity improved, with the average yield a hectare rising to 22.7 tonnes from 13.1 tonnes.The improved performance allowed it to pay out its first dividends since it was established.
The company says that despite strong competition from local and GCC producers, it increased milk sales by 9 per cent to RO 1.9 million ($4.9 million) in 1996/97. A new brand of flavored milk, launched in January 1997, has already become a market leader.
Figures for the financial year 1997/98 published by the MSM show net profits of RO 120,000 ($311,700) and total assets at the end of the year of RO 2.9 million ($7.5 million). This allowed the company to distribute a cash dividend for the year.
