Profile and Background
The company is the product of the 1993 merger of Oman Hotels Company and Muscat Tourism Company, which itself merged with Sohar Hotels Company in 1992. It is engaged in the construction and management of hotels throughout the sultanate.
In Muscat, it operates the Hotel Mercure al-Falaj, and the Ruwi Novotel. In Sohar, it runs the Al-Wadi Hotel. The company posted a consolidated net profit of RO 237,565 ($617,052) in 1998, down from RO 494,030 ($1.
3 million) in 1997, as revenues declined 7 per cent and depreciation charges rose sharply. In 1996, it took a 51 per cent stake in Al-Sharqiya Hotels & Tourism Company which has built a 108-room Mercure hotel in Sur, which is developing quickly as a commercial centre thanks to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fertilizer projects located there.
Al-Sharqiya has capital of RO 1 million ($2.6 million) and additional funding is coming from a RO 1 million loan from Oman Development Bank and a RO 500,000 ($1.3 million) government soft loan. Oman Hotels & Tourism also owns a stake in Al-Batinah Hotels Company, which runs the Sohar Beach hotel, and made a net profit of RO 86,894 ($225,699) in 1998 against a profit of RO 122,485 ($318,143) in 1997.
Among Oman Hotel & Tourism's major shareholders is Soleiman al-Hoqeini.
