Profile and Background
Oman Textile Mills Company was established in 1988 and is engaged in the manufacture of a range of fabrics and materials, including dishdashas - the traditional gowns worn by Omanis - 100 per cent cotton textiles and printed curtain fabrics.
In 1996, profits were halved when the company lost a lucrative government contract to supply military and other attire. Sales tumbled 50 per cent in 1997 as cheaper imported textiles from Asia took market share.
Securities investments and a tax rebate ensured net earnings only dropped by 12 per cent. Sales income recovered in 1998, rising 23 per cent to RO 4.1 million ($10.6 million), but the MSM slump led to a 65 per cent fall in investment income.
The company was also obliged to take provisions of RO 300,000 ($779,220) for the decline in the value of its investment portfolio, and as a result, net profits plunged 69 per cent. In 1999, sales rose by 24 per cent and net income advanced by 163 per cent.
The share price lost ground modestly in 1999 and advanced slightly in the first half of 2000. Oman Textile Mills is part of the Omzest group, with Omar al-Zawawi holding about 20 per cent of its shares.
