Profile and Background
Established in 1981, Raysut Cement Company is one of only two cement producers in the sultanate, the other being Oman Cement Company (OCC). Raysut has a capacity of 250,000 tonnes a year (t/y), compared to OCC's 624,000 t/y.
Both have increased capacity, OCC to 1.2 million t/y and Raysut to 750,000 t/y through a new 500,000-t/y line. Raysut plans to sell the increased capacity in the export market and in the local market.
Total demand for cement in Oman in 1998 was estimated at 1.4 million t/y.The new capacity of both companies came on stream in 1998. The cost of the Raysut expansion was some RO 36.4 million ($95 million).
About half the financing was provided by capital and reserves, and the US' Export-Import Bank has supplied a loan for $25 million. The remainder came from loans from the government, local commercial banks and Oman Development Bank.
Raysut's sales have shown consistent growth in the past six years, and grew by 6 per cent in 1998. However, profits in that year were hit by a fall in other income and higher sales and distribution costs.
Exports to markets including Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen account for about 30 per cent of sales. Raysut was awarded an ISO 9002 certificate in 1997.
