Profile and Background
Qassim Agricultural Development Company (Gaco), based in Buraidah, was established in 1985 to develop farming activities in Qassim province in the centre of Saudi Arabia. The company is 100 per cent privately owned.
Qassim has ideal conditions for wheat farming, and Gaco flourished initially due to the government's wheat price support programme. In 1987 and 1988, the company reported a return on sales profit margin of more than 40 per cent.
Following delays in government payments to farms and farmers for wheat purchases and the phased elimination of the price support programme, the company has been obliged to seek alternative ways of making profits.
It has opened a date factory and is now developing dairy activities. The company reported a 15 per cent fall in sales revenue to SR 36.7 million ($9.8 million) in 1998. However, losses were sharply reduced to SR 19.
