Profile and Background
Saudi Arabian Public Transport Company (Saptco) was established in 1979 to develop a national coach and bus system. It is 70 per cent owned by private investors and 30 per cent by government agencies.Saptco now serves all nine of the kingdom's main cities plus more than 300 towns and villages.
Saptco also operates international bus services to neighboring countries. It operates a total of 2,300 buses and has transported more than 1,000 million people since it was created. In 1997, the last year for which full figures are available, the company transported a total of 24.

It also offers charter and contract services. To support its fleet, Saptco has established a central refurbishment workshop in Riyadh. This can complete full renovations of buses and coaches. The company has a 50 per cent stake in the Saudi-Bahraini Transport Company which services passengers traveling between the kingdom and Bahrain.
Activities were expanded in 1998 with the launch of a new service to neighboring Yemen, which became operational in July of that year. Future plans include setting up a central station in Riyadh.Saptco posted a 5 per cent increase in net profits to SR 89.
