Profile and Background
Saudi Hollandi Bank, the first bank in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was founded in 1926 as the Netherlands Trading Society, and was originally established with one office in Jeddah to serve the pilgrims from the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia).
For some time, as the only operating bank in the kingdom, Saudi Hollandi Bank served as the kingdom's central bank, maintaining the gold stock of the country, and processing the first oil-related transactions.
In 1964, the Netherlands Trading Society became the Algemene Bank Nederland (or ABN). Today, Saudi Hollandi Bank is a Saudi joint stock company, established by Royal Decree in 1976, with a capital of SR 420 million ($112 million).
The bank's global affiliation with ABN AMRO gives access to international financial markets and instruments as well as to a global branch banking network. In 1999, the bank reported a 2.9 per cent rise in total assets to SR 19,665 million ($5,244 million), making it the seventh largest of the nine commercial banks in the kingdom.
