Profile and Background
Yanbu Cement Company was established in 1977 to manufacture and supply cement for the northeast of the kingdom. The company is 21.1 per cent owned by government agencies. In 1997, the company completed work on its new factory, which has capacity of 7,000 tonnes a day and produces a wider range of specialized cement than the existing unit.
Cement production has grown steadily since 1996 with 1.5 million tonnes produced in 1997 and 2.2 million tonnes in 1998. More impressive has been Yanbu Cement's ability to match production increases with higher sales volumes over the same period.
Analysts say the domestic cement market is swamped with overproduction, and that strong demand for Yanbu's cement may be the localized product of developments in Yanbu industrial city.Yanbu Cement, like other Saudi cement companies, recorded significant profits in the early 1990s.
After a peak was hit in 1994, Yanbu Cement's earnings eased between 1995 and 1997 but record profits were reported in 1998, headline figures released in late January 1999 revealed. Net profits reached SR 167.
7 million ($44.7 million) in 1998, up 8 per cent on SR 151.1 million ($41.3 million) reported in 1997. An 11 per cent rise in operating profit to SR 160.2 million ($42.7 million) boosted the bottom line.
Shareholders' equity expanded by 4 per cent by the end of 1998 to SR 1,469 million ($391.8 million) from SR 1,408 million ($376.6 million) at the same point of the previous year.
