  • PRESS RELEASE

Employee volunteers at HSBC have been busy preparing for Ramadan for several weeks now. Every afternoon since early July, a group of employees have been changing into T-shirts to meet at Emaar Square, where an unfurnished office is used to pack essential household items such as rice, flour, sugar and lentils for needy families in the UAE.

The employees have not worked with each other before but teamwork is instantaneous at this Ramadan activity.

The volunteers energetically fill boxes with these household items so that 2,500 less fortunate families across the UAE can enjoy Ramadan.

Food packing is not the only activity organised by HSBC employees this Ramadan. They also contributed over Dhs40,000 to buy iftar meals and Eid gift packs for 1,000 labourers.

The labourers receive soaps, razors, shaving creams, phone cards, T-shirts and pants, among other items. Min Ly, a HSBC employee who has been volunteering for the last 3 years, said, "Charity and volunteering are important areas of focus for my friends and me at HSBC.It's an opportunity to offer something to those who work outside all through the hot summer months, a job made many times harder during the month of Ramadan. I also did it last year, and the gratitude we got from all those we met was very rewarding."

Besides food packing and iftar for labourers, HSBC employees also organised games and iftar meals for under privileged children in Dubai, Sharjah, Al Ain, Ajman Fujairah, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah.

Throughout Ramadan, HSBC employees make their way to these children's schools and special needs centres and spend time with the children, doing arts and crafts and playing games, before sitting down to have iftar with the children.

HSBC has been organising these Ramadan activities for the last five years. This year, employees have signed up to volunteer over 1,425 hours to make the activities successful.

Abdulfattah Sharaf, Chief Executive Officer of United Arab Emirates, HSBC Bank Middle East said, "Supporting our communities is an important part of working for HSBC.We are very pleased to be able to create important and valuable opportunities during Ramadan for our staff to donate their time to working with those in need in the UAE."
