Iraq awards Alstom deal for Baghdad urban metro line

Iraq has awarded France's Alstom a contract for the construction of an above-ground urban metro line in the capital, Baghdad, Azzaman has reported. The project aims to ease congestions in Baghdad and provide a fast means of transport between the capital's most densely populated neighbourhoods, said Baghdad governor, Salah Abdulrazzaq. According to the deal, Alstom is to design the project and implement its first phase "which will cost $1.5bn," he said. The first phase will be 25km long and will involve building of 14 stations. Iraq will pay the project's cost to the French firm in instalments over a six-year period.
