Iraq mulling health care reform
- Iraq: Sunday, February 17 - 2013 at 05:00
The Iraqi health ministry is considering the possibility of enacting a health care law to be the cornerstone of the country's plan to improve the level of health services provided by medical institutions, Iraq Business has reported. The Iraqi government allocates an estimated $5bn annually to cover the needs of the health sector, whose infrastructure is limited. Legislators, however, are questioning the move, saying that the ministry has only been able to spend about half of its share in Iraq's budget over the past few years. "What is the point in legislating a new law that is basically aimed at acquiring additional financial returns?" said chairperson of the Health Committee in the Iraqi Parliament, Liqaa al-Yassin. Iraqi health institutions, including primary care centres and secondary hospitals, offer services to citizens at almost symbolic prices. The enactment of a health care law would involve converting these services to paid services, but at "reasonable prices," according to the ministry.
