The Information Technology Authority (ITA) has achieved a new milestone by receiving ISO certifications in two categories, namely: ISO 14001:2004 in Environment Management System, and OHSAS: 18001:2007 in Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
As for the criteria met in order to obtain the ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS: 18001:2007 certifications, Hussain Salim Al Rahbi, ITA's Health & Safety Engineer, stated: "Among the most important criteria that ITA met in order to obtain these two certifications was the establishment of an Environment Management System (EMS) and an Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS). In fact, both systems play a major role in the process of controlling and supervising the implementation of ITA's policy regarding the provision of HSE essentials, as well as in ensuring compliance with specifications and the implementation of protective and preventive methods, for the basic elements of production and in providing a safe and healthy work environment, free of any accidents and diseases that may threaten the life of the people working therein. In addition, the systems help identify the various types of risks and expected environmental impacts. This, in turn, helps us set occupational rules and define their impact on the employees' health. Moreover, it enables us to establish such performance-enhancing standards as are intended for helping different entities determine, evaluate and oversee different work circumstances that could lead to workmen's injuries or endanger their health."
"The awarding of the two ISO Certifications to ITA is a testimony of the development that ITA is witnessing in the field of implementing international norms and standards in the work environment, and gives evidence of its keenness to provide health and safety requirements for all its employees, particularly if we take into consideration the rigorous criteria the ISO follows for quality checks," Al Rahbi added. As for the process of obtaining the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 Certifications, Yousuf Salam Al Harrasi, Quality Specialist in ITA's Operational Excellence Division, stated: "ITA is required to maintain OHSE Systems in accordance with specification requirements. This includes several steps which include the following: documentation of the HSE Policy; review, planning, implementation of operations and check of corrective measures; supervision by the management of systems performance on a regular basis; and, continuous improvement of HSE performance at ITA. Furthermore, the systems' success lies in the senior management and officials' support towards further improvement and development in order to preserve the concept of continuous improvement."
It is worth mentioning that ITA was previously awarded the ISO 9001:2008 Certification in 2010 for Quality Management Standard, and the ISO 27001:2005 Certification in 2011 for Information Security System Management Standard.
