Jordan cuts illiteracy rate tenfold since 1961

Jordan's education ministry has said it has reduced the kingdom's illiteracy rate from 67.6% in 1961 to 6.7% in 2011 through its long-term plans, Jordan Times has reported. The ministry aims to further cut down the illiteracy rate, which currently stands at 3.6% for men and 9.9% for women, by half by the year 2015 and eradicate it completely by 2020, education minister, Fayez Saudi, said.
