Jordan's Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) has launched its first JD85m berth expansion project in anticipation of an increase in regional and international trade activities, Jordan Times has reported. The new expansion would increase the capacity of the port from its current level of 850,000 twenty-foot equivalent units to 1.5 million, said ACT chief executive, Soren Hansen. The project will ensure that Aqaba continues as a major gateway for the Levant and Iraq, he said. It will also allow shipping lines to upgrade their vessels, which in turn will further improve the competitiveness of the city and benefit end consumers, Hansen noted.
