Mobile broadband expansion 'vital' for Saudi Arabia

  • Saudi Arabia: Sunday, July 08 - 2012 at 12:10

The GSM Association (GSMA) has said greater allocation of spectrum for mobile broadband is vital for the economic and social development of Saudi Arabia, Arab News has reported. The global industry body said the release of internationally harmonised spectrum in the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands would generate an additional SR358bn ($95.5bn) in Saudi GDP and create 425,000 jobs between 2013 and 2025, Peter Lyons, GSMA director of spectrum policy, Africa and Middle East, told the daily. "This sum could fall to just $26bn if the release of the necessary spectrum is delayed to 2018, and the number of jobs created could be reduced to just 75,000," Lyons said.
