  • FlyYeti.com launches Doha service

  • FlyYeti.com, Nepal’s first low-cost carrier, today launched non-stop service between Kathmandu, the carrier’s global hub, and Doha, Qatar’s capital. The airline, which will provide service between the two cities five times per week, recently also commenced service to Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, UAE, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

  • 3rd Abu Dhabi Airport terminal to open soon

  • A third terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport that will be exclusively used by national carrier Etihad is set to open in a few months, reported Gulf News, citing a spokesman for Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC). The new terminal will boost the airport's passenger handling capacity by 70%. The UAE capital is expanding its airport capacity at a cost of $6.8bn as part of its efforts to become a major tourist hub.

  • Boeing names Kinscherff head of ME operations

  • Boeing has named Paul Kinscherff to replace John Craig as president of Boeing Middle East, reported Bloomberg. Kinscherff, who will be based in Dubai, had been Boeing's treasurer since 2003. Craig is retiring after more than four years in the region. David Dohnalek will replace Kinscherff as treasurer.

  • Etihad achieves 1st quarter record

  • Etihad Airways achieved a record-breaking first quarter and remains on track to achieve its 2008 target of carrying six million passengers by the end of the year, the airline said in a statement. The Abu Dhabi-based airline carried 1.4 million passengers during the first three months of 2008, compared to one million for the same period in 2007, an increase of 40%.

  • Emirates notches 100th global destination

  • Emirates Airlines achieved its 100th global destination on Monday with the inaugural flight of its new route from Dubai to Capetown, South Africa. The new service to Capetown will be a daily non-stop flight. The airline currently offers 21 flights per week to Johannesburg.

  • ME passenger load factor dips

  • Airline passenger load factor in the Middle East dipped almost 1% to 72.6% for the month of February, Gulf News reported, citing the International Air Transport Association. The load factor decline was balanced by strong passenger growth, which is spurred by continuing healthy economic growth, IATA said.It showed that the global passenger load factor was 73.3 per cent last month, 0.6 per cent lower than the same month in 2007.

  • Air Arabia net profit up 272%

  • Air Arabia, the first and largest low-cost carrier in the Middle East and North Africa, has announced that it posted a net profit of Dhs376m ($102m), an increase of 272% compared to Dhs101m in 2006, reported Gulf News. The airline also posted a turnover of Dhs1.283bn in 2007, up 71.3% compared to Dhs749.16m in 2006.

  • Jazeera joins OnAir call offer

  • Jazeera Airways said it will offer OnAir’s inflight mobile phone services, including voice, SMS and GPRS this year. Mobile phones and BlackBerry-type devices will be able to send and receive text messages, emails including attachments, and to make and receive mobile phone calls inflight. The service will use Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband.
