  • Cargoitalia becomes 38th airline at Abu Dhabi Airport

  • Abu Dhabi Airports Company has announced the recent arrival of Cargoitalia, the privately-owned Italian freighter airline, making it the 38th international airline to operate a service out of Abu Dhabi. Operating out of its home-base of Milan Malpensa Airport, Cargoitalia will operate a twice weekly service between the Italian city and the capital of the UAE.

  • Al Maktoum airport plans temporary terminal

  • A temporary terminal will be ready at the new Al Maktoum International Airport in Jebel Ali in the third quarter of 2009, reported Gulf News. The new terminal, which will have a capacity of up to seven million passengers per year, will take over all Terminal 2 operations at Dubai International Airport.

  • New Kuwaiti airline to launch in January

  • Kuwait's new airline Wataniya Airways will begin flying in January next year, reported Gulf News. The carrier, which will be the second privately owned airline in Kuwait and the fourth in the region, will offer direct services from Kuwait to destinations south and west of the country in the Gulf and the wider region using the A320 aircraft. It will directly compete for local passengers with the country's flag carrier Kuwait Airways and budget operator Jazeera Airways.

  • Etihad ups Qatar flights

  • Abu Dhabi based carrier Etihad has announced that it will increase the number of flights from Qatar to two per day as part of its summer flying schedule. The move brings the total number of weekly flights through the UAE's capital to 728.

  • Air Arabia to fly to Dhaka

  • Low cost carrier Air Arabia has announced that it will begin flights to Dhaka in Bangladesh. The route will operate four times per week and is the airline's second destination in the country, with the first being a service to Chittagong. Flights will begin from 8 June.

  • Etihad signs MoU with Malaysia

  • The UAE's national carrier, Etihad Airways, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Malaysia Airlines. The deal will see the two carriers add destinations to their portfolios and potentially collaborate on frequent flyer programmes, ground handling, customer support and airport lounge access.

  • Air Arabia to open Levant hub

  • Low cost carrier Air Arabia is to open a fourth hub in Egypt, Syria or Jordan to link its hub in Sharjah with its Morocco base. The airline is expecting to boost passenger numbers by 48% in 2008, to four million per year.

  • Silverjet shares suspended

  • Struggling business class-only carrier Silverjet has suspended trading in London because it is yet to receive part of a pledged investment. The airline was due to get an injection of funds from UAE-based Viceroy Holdings, but has yet to receive all of the money. The carrier said that it was in continuing discussions with other potential investors.
