  • Egypt in UK airport row

  • Egypt has said it will search British personalities going through its airports after Pope Shenouda III, Patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church, was made to go through a metal detector at Heathrow Airport in London. The 84 year old, who was opening a catholic church in the UK, was also told he would undergo a body search, but officials backed down after he objected. A strongly worded statement sent to the UK government said that if high level Egyptian figures are subject to such treatment, it would exert 'tit for tat' on British personalities.

  • Etihad to buy up to 100 planes

  • Etihad is to order up to 100 planes later this year to expand its fleet. It will buy both narrow- and wide-bodied aircraft and may split the order between Boeing and Airbus. CEO James Hogan told Gulf News that negotiations were ongoing for 50-100 jets, which would be delivered after 2012. Etihad currently has 37 planes, with six more due for delivery this year, and another 16 for delivery by 2011.

  • Airlines affected by 787 delay

  • Airlines have lined up for compensation after Boeing Co said there will be further six months delay for its new 787 Dreamliner plane, reported Reuters. Gulf Air has ordered 16 of the 787s, but said it was unaffected by the delay as it is not due to take delivery until 2016. Other Middle East airlines which have made orders were Qatar Airways, Kuwait Aviation Lease and Finance Co and Dubai Aerospace Enterprise.

  • Emirates to fly to San Francisco

  • Emirates has announced that it will fly non-stop from Dubai to San Francisco from October 26, taking its US destinations to four after New York, Houston and Los Angeles. Emirates will be the first to connect the two cities using its newest, technologically-advanced Boeing 777-200LR on the route. The aircraft offers 266 seats in a three-class configuration. The service will additionally offer 10 tonnes of cargo capacity in both directions.

  • Ethiopian Airlines adds new Gulf routes

  • Ethiopian Airlines, the fastest growing African carrier, has announced its plan to launch flight services to Kuwait and Riyadh starting June 2. The flights will operate Addis Ababa-Riyadh-Kuwait-Addis Ababa twice weekly on Mondays and Thursdays with the return flights on Tuesdays and Fridays. Ethiopian currently operates 35 flights weekly to six destinations in the Middle East: Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Beirut, Dubai, Jeddah and Sana’a.

  • Massive drugs haul at Dubai airport

  • Customs officials at Dubai airport have arrested a smuggler attempting bring in 137 capsules of heroin in their stomach. Officials became suspicious of the passenger, who had flown in from Asia, and used an intestines detector to spot the drugs. No details have been given on the passenger, who admitted the UAE was the final destination for the heroin.

  • Airlines offer low-cost fares to Kuala Lumpur

  • Air Arabia, the first and largest low-cost carrier in the Mena region, and FlyYeti.com, Nepal's first LCC, jointly announced today the launch of daily service between Sharjah, UAE, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Air Arabia will operate the Sharjah-Kathmandu leg of the journey, with FlyYeti.com, an Air Arabia joint venture company, operating the connecting flights between Kathmandu and Kuala Lumpur. On a daily basis, outbound flights will depart Sharjah at 7:15AM, and inbound flights will depart Kuala Lumpur at 4:55AM.

  • JetLite eyes Middle East

  • JetLite, the low-fare subsidiary of India's private airline Jet Airways, is planning to launch operations to the Middle East by the middle of this year, reported India's Economic Times. In January, Jet Airways became the first Indian private carrier to operate in the Gulf sector. It currently operates flights between India and Gulf destinations like Kuwait, Bahrain, Doha and Muscat.
