During the seminar, Elaine Kane, Wireless Networking Specialist, Fast Lane, discussed issues such as wireless standards, Cisco Wireless Networking Solutions, wired versus wireless solutions and an in-depth comparison between the two and finally the critical issue of wireless security.

'The wireless networking seminar conducted by Fast Lane was very informative. It covered the basics of Wireless Networking and was received very well by all,' said Dr. Hamad Odhabi, Programme Chairman for Higher Diploma (HD) and Bachelors, IT programmes, Higher Colleges of Technology, HCT. 'The attending Diploma/Higher Diploma students from the Cisco Academy Program CCNA were particularly interested in Access Point Configuration and security issues relating to wireless technology at the workplace.'

'At Fast Lane we strive to stay abreast of the latest advancements in the networking and IT fields. We want to ensure the transfer of expert knowledge, to college students and professionals, enhancing their awareness on key topical issues such as network security and wireless networking which are growing in importance amongst businesses in the region and globally,' said Josef Miskulnig, Managing Director, Fast Lane Middle East and Europe. 'For example, students and professionals in the Middle East need to be aware of the latest developments in Wireless LANS, as they are becoming very popular amongst both home users and SMBs.'

SMBs and home users across the Middle East region are looking into adopting wireless network solutions for several reasons, including long-term cost savings - ease of deployment vs 'wired' setups - reduced hardware costs and enhanced communication both internally and externally, for an increasingly mobile workforce.

'Nonetheless, a lot of work still needs to be done for the region to witness a definite shift towards wireless technologies, in terms of product range, infrastructure and awareness, the later being our area of expertise,' added Miskulnig. 'Our partnership with HCT aims to provide a link between the academic world and the real world of business; bridging the gap between the academic and professional.'

Fast Lane has a strong relationship with the local business community and with local training colleges such as the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT). Fast Lane's partnership with HCT also involves conducting 'guest' appearances at tutorials, conferences, providing additional coaching for students; assisting HCT in placing students in the industry; occasionally arranging student internships. The result is a positive and rewarding exchange of experiences.

Future 'wireless networking' seminars will combine theory with practical, hands on experience, allowing students to experience for themselves how a typical wireless networked environment is setup and how it performs.
