With advanced tracking and monitoring capabilities, the new 'Smart Box' can also be integrated with the local traffic department to issue speeding tickets after several 'voice' warnings.
The ambitious project is a venture between UAE University and IBM's Engineering and Technology Services organizations to design, develop and test the smart box that can be used as a platform to develop advanced telematics applications. Similar to the so-called black box found in aircrafts, the device can capture, analyse and deliver data via a wireless network. It is equipped with embedded computing power and integrates GSM/GPRS functionality, combined with GPS and voice recognition systems into the vehicle's systems and environment for intelligent connectivity.
'Not only is the smart box a breakthrough in technology, but a revolutionary device that will address the alarming issue of increasing accidents and injuries we see on our roads today,' said Dr. Ali Alnoaimi, Chief Operating Officer and Provost of UAE University.
'Today's announcement is only the beginning. The smart box is going to open up a whole new world of telematics applications that will change people's lives in more ways than one can imagine,' said Dr. Rafic Makki, Dean of the College of Information Technology of UAE University.
Since the announcement of the Smart Box project in May this year, the team from IBM and UAE University's College of IT has been working on the first prototype which incorporates the speed control mechanism. The on-going project will cover other aspects to the telematics revolution that will create an altogether new ecosystem:
Safety Zone-Applications that will enhance the safety of the driver and the vehicle, such as tracking and monitoring speeding violations, driving violations, reckless driving, car theft, as well as providing emergency services and anti-theft measures.
Comfort Zone-Applications that will enhance the driver and passenger's experience, such as route finder, traffic control, infotainment (music, games, on-demand movies; communication, productivity tools, personalized news, sports, and information) and Location-Based-Services (LBS) for events, retail store, cinemas, and restaurants.
Maintenance Zone-Enhancing vehicle maintenance through advanced automobile diagnostics capabilities, technical updates, vehicle maintenance, as well as remote monitoring and repair.
Efficiency Zone-Optimising resources such as integrating vehicle location with job requirements, fuel consumption, mileage information, driving hours and vehicle condition to maximize efficiency.
'What the introduction of mobile phones did for human mobility, connectivity and convenience, the Smart Box will do for human safety and for moving-vehicle connectivity and intelligence. Nothing short than a new 'paradigm shift' is on the horizon,' said Samer Shaar, general manager of IBM Middle East, Egypt and Pakistan. 'The development team has made remarkable progress in record time, demonstrating the high level of local development capabilities that we have in the region. We are exceptionally proud to be part of such a revolutionary project.'
IBM Engineering & Technology Services provides clients in a variety of industries with access to engineering skills, research capabilities and intellectual capital, helping them design, develop, manufacture and bring to market innovative electronics products that depend on the integration of complex and emerging technologies.
The 'Smart Box' will be showcased at GITEX 2004, in the concourse area opposite Al Multaka Ballroom.
