UK Top 20 university, Middlesex University, has opened its Dubai campus with two degrees, a BA in Business Administration and BA in Business Information Systems. Other courses start in September 2005. Meanwhile, identical courses are available at the London campus.

The University Learning and Research Network component of the National Broadband Network was officially launched today at Jordan University. King Abdullah II inaugurated a videoconference held between the eight public university presidents, each from his campus, to showcase the capabilities and the advantages of this new network.
Sir Michael Bichard, who is non-executive chairman of the UAE's Global Education Management System's arts subsidiary, has called for the adoption of a new performing arts ciriculum in some Dubai schools as a way to stimulate creativity and innovation, reported Gulf News. Sir Michael is also vice-chancellor of the University of Arts in London.

Teachers, management and parents at the Ahmad bin Majid School in Ras Al Khaimah staged a two-hour demonstration yesterday in protest at the poor condition of the school which was built 40 years ago. They urged the UAE Ministry of Education to find an immediate solution.

The UAE Ministry of Finance has teamed up with the Zayed University and the University of California at Berkeley to create an innovations award under an agreement signed yesterday. The framework for the award will be completed by mid-November and a presentation is slated for June 2005.

Dozens of students have failed to turn up at the beginning of the new academic year in Ras Al Khaimah, reported Gulf News. However, teachers said that many believed it was a waste of time as courses did not start until the following week. Officials have written to parents asking them to ensure that students attend for administrative reasons.

The Council of the University of Southern Queensland today gave full approval to the opening of a branch in the Knowledge Village known as USQ in Dubai. The number of students in the Dubai Knowledge Village will rise from 2,500 to 6,000 next year with the addition more universities and the expanded operations of existing universities and education service providers, said officials. The proportion of foreign students is to rise from 15 to to 25 per cent.

Oman is offering three scholarships to Bahrainis, reported local papers. One scholarship is for computer engineering at Sultan Qaboos University and the others are at health institutes in Oman. Interested students who graduated from Bahrain schools this year with an average score of over 90 per cent should apply not later than tomorrow.
The UAE Ministry of Education has published a set of guidelines for all online and distance learning programmes, reported Gulf News. The announcement came as the third annual e-learning conference got underway at the Abu Dhabi Men's College yesterday.
