The Dubai Department of Economic Development has announced the establishment of awards for economic research - the Dubai Economic Research Award - in co-ordination with Zayed University. It is open to all researchers and students resident in the UAE at the time of submission, including both nationals and expatriates. The deadline for submissions is October 1 next year.

More than 700 bachelor degree granting institutions in the US do not now require applicants to submit scores from the SAT, according to The American-Canadian Center for Academic Placement. This test strikes fear into the hearts of many Middle East students, but a growing number of American colleges, both public and private, have either eliminated or made the SAT requirement optional.
Syrian teacher Munir Mohammad has been fired from Abu Dhabi's Creative Private School for beating a boy in an effort to control a class, reported Gulf News. The victim was an excellent student who has been first in his class for five years. His parents have decided not to press charges.

A total of 130 projects have been shortlisted for grants from Shell for the 10th annual Shell Better Environment Awards. Shell has invested USD1m in the BEA over the past decade. Entries from schools across the UAE are scrutinised and evaluated in the process of selecting a short list that will be receiving cash grants from Shell to enable their proposals to be put into action.

UAE Education Minister Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan flew in by helicopter to Delma Island yesterday for a surprise visit to check on its schools, reported Gulf News. He visited five schools and later said that they all needed to be completely revamped.

The newly announced Dubai School of Government will start its first executive learning program in March. The DSG is to be located in the World Trade Centre complex while a permanent home is built, said officials. Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government is assisting the project.

Jordan inaugurated two school labs especially equipped for blind children last week. The two labs are part of the Coca-Cola pioneer Students of Resolve project - Schools.com to computerize schools in Jordan. The new computer labs in Abdullah Bin Maktoum School in Marka and the Elementary Mixed School for the Blind comes within Coca-Cola's long term initiative to equip all elementary schools in Jordan.
The University College of Bahrain has announced an alliance with the American University of Beirut's external region programmes department. The new alliance will allow specialists from the AUB to conduct regular visits to the UCB and help with curricula planning, teaching methods, communication media, information technology and academic systems.
Students from the Dubai University College are to be treated to lectures by industry executives from Dubai. The five-day lecture programme will run from today to try to incorporate real-life experience into the academic curriculum, and has been welcomed by the private sector.

The new Dubai School of Government was launched today at the Arab Strategy Forum by Dubai Holdings CEO Mohammed Al Gergawi and Harvard University. It will start with research and executive programmes for policy makers, and launch academic qualifications by year-three. The aim is also to transfer Dubai best-practice to other countries in the region, said officials.

Middle East students are increasingly attracted to studying in the UK, particularly since 9/11, reported Gulf News. At the weekend the Sheraton in Abu Dhabi hosted the biggest ever British education exhibition. Some 3,000 UAE nationals are studying in the UK, said organisers.

Saudi Arabia's new Taif Private University will open in February. The Hawiya-based university will have faculties of medicine, nursing, health administration and health information management, reported Arab News. The first phase will cost USD59m, and the faculties will have cooperation arrangements with the American University of Arizona and Unesco.
