UAE-based Global Education Management Systems has bought the British International School, Berlin, from Nord Anglia. This follows its acquisition of Nord Anglia's UK portfolio of schools in June this year, and is Gems first move into Continental Europe.

The Dubai Department of Economic Development has signed a deal with the Zayed University to enable the leverage of the latter's academic strengths and research methodologies. DED Director-General Mohammed Ali Alabbar said this would facilitate advanced economic research and studies in Dubai in particular.

Oman's Ministry of Education has installed a high-end wireless network in more than 200 schools in the Sultanate. The Cisco Systems solution has provided over 100,000 students with high speed access to Internet and e-learning applications, increasing schools' ability to teach sciences and other laboratory based subjects.
New UAE Minister for Education Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan is to meet 500 teaching staff from private schools today, reported Wam. The meeting is to announce the ministry's new vision and discuss the best options for improving the education sector.

Oracle has successfully completed its rollout of the Oracle Academic Initiative in the Middle East. OAI's membership in the Middle East has grown to 22,000 students since its launch in 2000 and regional rollout in 2002. In 2004 alone, Oracle has granted USD57m worth of cutting-edge software licences and support services to 68 faculties in the Middle East.

The Dubai Metals and Commodities Centre announced today that the Gemological Institute of America will open a new education facility in Dubai in the fall of 2006. The GIA has a long tradition of delivering gemological education services worldwide. The Dubai branch will be located in the DMCC's landmark Almas Tower.

Jordan's Aqaba Development Corporation aims to transform the Red Sea port into a student city, with the establishment of the American University in Aqaba, due to open in 2009. The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority has also signed a deal with International Global Education Systems to build a new USD8m school in Aqaba, catering mainly for children of foreign residents.
The Dubai Knowledge Village is to double in size to accomodate 25-30 international universities and 36,000 students over the next 24 months. CEO Dr. Abdullah Al Karam said we have already outgrown our current campus after just one year. It is now home to 15 global universities.
