ICAI, Muscat seminar Nov 25-26

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is holding a seminar in Muscat on November 25-26 for continuing professional education. Attendees will gain 15 hours of CPA examination credit which will count towards the full requirements for the qualification.

Sharjah accountancy course rip-off

Accountancy students at the European Educational Institute in Sharjah claim that that they have been ripped off when a course was cancelled and their registration fee was not re-funded, reported Gulf News. A Dhs1,000 fee was payable against a final cost of Dhs9,800 for the certified management accountancy course but the course ended after only five lessons.

AUS, Sheikh Zayed Memorial

Architecture graduates from the American University of Sharjah have unveiled designs for a memorial to the late President of the UAE Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who died last week. They spent four sleepless nights to complete the plan for a large black marble slab, representing his stability and strength, which will stand in a pool of water.

UAE pilot licence course

Emirates Aviation College is offering a 13-week ground training course for the Air Transport Pilot Licence, known as a frozen ATPL, in collaboration with the Jeppesen Academy. Holders of commercial pilot licences will be able to take the course alongside Emirates' own cadets.

Shell helps Omani computer skills

The Omani Ministry of Education's International Computer Driving License (ICDL) programme has received USD150,000 from Shell. The money will be used to test and certify 2,290 teachers, who will then go on to train public sector employees in the Sultanate. ICDL is an internationally-recognised computer proficiency standard.

Shell sponsors eco-scheme

Shell is to provide the UAE's Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency with three years' worth of funding. The capital will be used for the agency's Comprehensive Environmental Education and Awareness Programme, which aims to foster a holistic approach to sustainable development and environmental issues.

Emirates Group sponsors 20 scholars

The Emirates Group has presented a cheque to the British University in Dubai on behalf of 20 students selected for the January 2005 intake. Emirates is paying for half scholarships for the students, who have been selected on the basis of merit, as part of a corporate campaign to support Dubai as a centre for academic excellence. The students will undertake masters programmes in informatics, project management and education.

Bahrain to host SME training centre

The G8 group of industrialised nations has chosen Bahrain to be the site of a new regional training centre. The centre will aim to promote the development of the private sector and to encourage young people to launch small and medium sized enterprises. FGB to fund annual staff scholarships

First graduates from special needs course

Six blind or partially sighted students in the UAE have graduated from a specially designed English course. Developed by Tamkeen, a training initiative for the visually impaired, and the British Council, the course helps students learn English language and computing skills using Braille books and software that transcribes written text into audio.

Qtel offers Internet in Iraq

Qtel, the Qatar telecoms operator, will provide Internet services to universities and other education institutions in Iraq. Qtel's Very Small Aperture Terminal technology will connect education providers within Iraq. The deal falls under the International Fund for Higher Education in Iraq, functioning under the patronage of the Qatar Foundation.
