AUD, free lecture on Islam

The contribution of Islam to civilisation will be the topic of a free lecture at the American University in Dubai this Saturday. Leading American Muslim Hamza Yousuf Hanson is to deliver the lecture as a guest of UAE President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

New principal for Qatar school

The Ideal Indian School in Qatar has appointed Rafia Zafar Ali as principal. She has taught in Delhi Public School, R.K.Puram, New Delhi, served as a Lecturer at the College of Pharmacy, Delhi University, aside from stints at University of Tehran and Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi. Her record as a principal spans 13 years, including five years in the Gulf.

Mandatory Arabic controversy

The re-imposition of mandatory Arabic in the UAE after a three-year break is causing controversy, reported Gulf News. The problem is that students now need to catch up on three years of work in a few months to reach the required standards in examinations. Gulf News argues that the Ministry should consider a two-year phased implementation.

Free conference on Islam starts

The first international Islamic conference on the Prophet's way of guidance opens today at Abu Dhabi's InterContinental Hotel. The event is free to all residents and held under the patronage of UAE President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It will emphasise the true call of Islam for forgiveness, acceptance and tolerance.

UAE, IT education initiative

The Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum IT Education Project has signed a deal with the International Computer Driving Licence GCC Foundation to enhance computer literacy in the UAE. Key elements are the adoption of the ICDL syllabus and international standards in the computer training of teachers.

Arabic for UAE grades 11, 12

All students in the UAE must sit mandatory Arabic-language examinations in grades 11 and 12, reported Gulf News. This is worrying parents who are concerned that their children will not be able to cope, especially those recently arrived or who have not studied the language for three years. Mandatory Arabic was introduced this year which some students have welcomed as a big advantage in the local jobs market.

Major UK exam overhaul

New proposals would replace the UK's GCSE and A-level exams with a single diploma system in a bid to improve basic skills like English and maths. The four-tier diploma would have harder but fewer exams which pupils would sit when they were ready. Students would take a common core of English and maths and decide at 14 whether to pursue a vocational or academic path.

RAK fines teacher

A female teacher in Ras Al Khaimah is to be fined half her monthly salary for asking students to bring in money for a computer laboratory, according to Gulf News. Officials said there was a ban on teachers collecting money from students which was ignored.
