BUiD scholarships open

The British University in Dubai is offering scholarships covering up to 50% of tuition fees, including a special category reserved for UAE nationals who hold degrees from Zayed University, the Higher Colleges of Technology and UAE University. Applications close on 14 September. The university is holding open days on campus at Dubai Knowledge Village on 10-11 September between 2pm-8pm.

Dubai schools double up

Around 400 school pupils enrolled at the Wellington School in Dubai will have lessons at the Winchester School at Jebel Ali while construction is finished off at their new school in Al Barsha, reported Gulf News. The head of Winchester says Wellington pupils will occupy rooms not currently in use and its own pupils will not be compromised. The Global Education Management Group manages both schools.

USQ works on student options

The Australian Consulate is working with the International Development Programme and the University of Southern Queensland in Dubai to help arrange alternate university admissions and visas for students stranded by the sudden closure of the university. Students may have the option of finishing courses in Australia, complete courses online, or transfer to other universities in Dubai.

Etisalat's eCompany is offering two online courses for the price of one as part of a promotion which runs from 4 September to 7 October. The offer covers any course series from Desktop, Business/Professional Skill Development, IT certification courses and vLabs training, on the LearnOnline website.

Deira school ready to open

The Deira International School is now ready for opening at the start of the new academic year on September 10. The 800,000 sqft school is located in the Dubai Festival City and is managed by Education Services Overseas Limited. It offers English teachers and the National Curriculum for England.

BUiD open day in AD

The British University in Dubai is to hold an open day in Abu Dhabi on September 5 in the Crowne Plaza hotel from 3-8pm. There will also be a public lecture at the same location at 6pm entitled 'Quality: Process or Culture' by Dr. Mohammed Arif.

Empost degree verification

Post offices in the UAE are now offering a Degree Verification Programme on behalf of the Labour and Social Affairs Ministry. The cost is Dhs500 per certificate. Empost is working closely with IntegraScreen to offer this new service which should help to speed up visa applications.

Mirdiff primary school opens

The Royal Dubai School in Mirdiff will start its first academic year from September 17, and is managed by the Global Education Management System. It will teach the National Curriculum of England from Foundation Stage 1 through to Year 6 and plans to later offer the international Bac.

UAE makes Arabic optional

Compulsory Arabic exams for grade 11 and 12 students in the UAE have been abandoned, reported Gulf News. This reverses a law in effect since April 2001. Parents and teachers immediately welcomed the move as lifting a burden from pupils.

USQD staff want compensation

Fourteen former staff members from the University of Southern Queensland Dubai branch, which closed suddenly this month, are demanding compensation for loss of employment without prior notice, reported Gulf News. The staff has written to the USQD alleging a lack of good faith.

SAE to join Knowledge Village

Australian film and multimedia training concern, the SAE Institute will open its first regional branch in the Dubai Knowledge Village this autumn, and shift later to the Dubai Studio City. SAE will offer vocational and higher education to internationally accredited standards.

DCCI, 100 scholarships

The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry has announced a training programme for 100 UAE nationals to enable them to gain employment at the DCCI, reported Gulf News. The scheme will be known as the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Scholarship Scheme.

BUiD, environmental building

The British University in Dubai has introduced a postgraduate degree course in Environmental Design in Building. The course is designed around local considerations such as the impact of high temperatures on construction and the need to reduce high power costs associated with air conditioning. Registration is now open, and the course starts on 24 September.

Teaching the environment

Indian schools in the region will teach environmental education from the start of the current academic year after an Indian Supreme Court ruling made teaching the subject compulsory. It will be taught in grades one to 11 in all Indian curriculum schools this year, and in grade 12 from next year.
