Dubai's Department of Economic Development and the British University in Dubai have agreed to develop a programme to promote economic and scientific research and development in the UAE. A research group comprised of representatives from both bodies will identify priorities for initiatives and projects.

Dubai real estate corporations, Nakheel and Dubai Properties, have put up $27.2m worth of resources as part of a joint initiative to support programmes being run by the Dubai Education Council. The firms say they want to promote and help upgrade the education sector to international standards.

A total of 162 UAE national students have completed Dubai Islamic Bank's Iktasib summer training programme, designed to provide training in banking with particular emphasis on shariah-compliant Islamic finance. Students who finished the programme will be given priority for employment vacancies at the bank.

The University of Southern Queensland Dubai will close after its licence to operate out of Dubai Knowledge Village was withdrawn following complaints from students, according to local media reports. DKV cited inadequate control from USQ Australia which affected management and academic quality. USQD said it was forced to close because of financial risks associated with a change in its licence status at DKV.

The Higher Colleges of Technology in the UAE started the 2005-06 academic year with a record number of more than 16,000 students, including 6,664 new admissions. A number of new courses are being offered throughout the HCT network of colleges after a review of local labour market requirements.

Palestinian teenagers are learning to become the next generation of leaders in the UNICEF-supported Gaza City's Children's Municipality Council. More than 18,000 children voted to elect 40 members. The CMC will shadow city council and is aimed at getting more young people involved in politics.
The Universal American School in Dubai is accepting enrollments for the 2005/06 school year which starts on 10 September. UAS follows the US college-preparatory curriculum and will soon introduce the International Baccalaureate programme. Information sessions and campus tours are being run daily from 11am.

The Princess Sumaya University for Technology in Jordan has been accredited to offer communications engineering as a major in the undergraduate program for the 2005/06 academic year. The course complements other majors offered at the university in computer sciences, electronic engineering and computer engineering.
Saudi students are ignoring claims of alleged harassment in the US since the events of 9/11, with more than 10,000 seeking admission to US universities this academic year, according to Ministry of Higher Education sources. The ministry gives bank guarantees to universities for the payment of academic fees, which is one of the main admission requirements.

Gulf Air will put 50 Bahraini, Omani and UAE nationals through a two-month summer work experience training programme which will consist of practical training in various departments of the airline. The airline is using the programme as a platform to select potential employees.
Universities from Bahrain, Malaysia and Oman are taking part in an exhibition of universities and higher education institutions in Salalah, Oman, as part of the region's summer Khareef Festival. The five-day show is organised by Samharam Higher Education in association with the Al Ghaith Company.
The UAE University will review its continuing education and e-learning programmes this year, which includes plans to introduce online courses, according to Minister of Education Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan. He said the development of human resources is a national goal in which e-learning can play a major role.

A revised syllabus to be introduced into Saudi secondary schools in September places a greater emphasis on science and job-oriented subjects. A new curriculum will also be introduced in middle schools for Islamic education and Arabic language, a Ministry of Education official said.
The UAE must transform its public school system into a world class-standard education system to create a knowledge society in the country, according to Minister of Education Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan. He said this will require well prepared teachers, modern and relevant curricula, and technology that will support the improvement of the system.

Cairo Amman Bank will award cash prizes to the top graduates in the marketing, finance and information management systems departments at the University of Jordan. The bank is also financially supporting MA studies for one student studying accountancy in the business administration faculty. The aim of the initiative is to encourage excellence through competition among students.
