Lootah sponsors nationals

S.S Lootah Group is sponsoring the International Computer Driving Licence course and English language courses for UAE national jobseekers, following a partnership agreement with the UAE human resources authority, Tanmia. At the end of the courses Tanmia will choose the best performing participants for management and commerce training.

Gulf Air trains unemployed

Gulf Air will train 21 unemployed Bahrainis for three months in its revenue department at the airline's headquarters in Muharraq. At the end of the programme trainees will be able to use the revenue accounting system, airlines revenue information entry system, bank settlement plan website, reservation system and the Oracle system.

UoWD scholarships open

The University of Wollongong in Dubai is offering 15 full and partial scholarships for the September intake of courses. Applications must be lodged by 31 August. UoWD degres are accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education and the Australian Government. Visit www.uowdubai.ac.ae.

Qatar targets cultural heritage

Qatar has started building museums and preserving archaeological sites in an effort to make Qatar a cultural and educational centre in the region. Supreme Council for Culture, Arts and Heritage director Mohammad Al Baloushi told Gulf News that the council would set up four major museums and a national library. It has plans to open some of the museums before the end of 2006.

Knet opens CIM courses

Regional training and management consultancy, knowledgenetwork, is running courses for the Chartered Institute of Marketing programmes commencing August 2005. Knet offers the CIM Professional Certificate and the Professional Diploma in Marketing qualifications. Accredited CIM sales courses will be launched in January 2006.

Emirates degree accreditation

The Emirates Aviation College has received accreditation from the Ministry of Education for its Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering degree. The four-year academic programme consists of classroom lectures, laboratory assignments and practical training. Degrees in air transport management, tourism management, and computer and electronics engineering are also due to be accredited before the start of the academic year in September.

Police run training courses

The Criminal Evidence Division of Dubai Police has put 75 students through training courses in criminal investigation, management of criminal laboratories and forensic medicine. Sixty students from Dubai Medical College were also given training.

Malaysia seek accreditation

Malaysian higher education officials will meet with UAE Education Ministry officials to seek accreditation for more than 200 of its universities and colleges, reported Gulf News. The move is part of an effort by Malaysia to standardise accreditation for the country's institutions in Gulf countries. There are currently about 200 UAE residents studying in Malaysia.

ADCCI embraces ICDL

The Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has integrated the International Computer Driving Licence into its work passport programme to improve job prospects for UAE nationals. The ICDL GCC Foundation is in the process of granting accreditation to two centres of the ADCCI in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

Microsoft partners Arab education

Ten Arab education ministries have signed up for Microsoft's Partners in Learning initiative which is designed to improve the use of information communications technology in schools. Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Yemen are participating in the the programme.

Zurich consultants pass test

More than 130 financial consultants from Zurich International Life sat for the International Qualification run by the UK-based Charted Insurance Institute, with 84% achieving a pass mark or above. Director of the CII Paul Brierly said such a success rate reflects the high standards of service that customers can expect to receive from Zurich.

The University of Abu Dhabi is accepting Sanabil financial aid applications for the 2005-06 academic year. Sanabil is the university's financial aid program offering students 50-100% financial aid for tuition fees, books, registration and other ancillary expenses.

UAE admissions up 9%

UAE admissions to higher education have risen by 9% to 11,000 over the past year. But more than 3,000 applicants were refused for not meeting requirements or lack of funds, reported Gulf News. The news came as the Minister of Education Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan signed the list of students for 2005-6.
