DEC Chairman expounds ambition

The chairman of the newly established Dubai Education Council Ahmad bin Byat told Gulf News that his aim was to ensure that the Dubai education sector produced the skills required in the local economy. He put particular emphasis on preparing students for jobs in IT, trade and commerce, property management, logistics and business.

CBSE students, extra exam time

Students taking the Indian Board examinations are to get an extra 15 minutes at the beginning of the exams to read through the question paper, reported Gulf News. The decision will come into effect from the academic year 2006 and follows complaints about delays in starting exams.

Bahrain, women-only university

Bahrain's parliament has given the nod to a draft law to establish women-only colleges within the university sector, reported Reuters. The law, which is not going to be compulsory for existing institutions, is the first of its kind in the island state.

AD, new private Alhosn University

The UAE Ministry of Education has accredited a new private university being set up in Abu Dhabi which will offer a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering degree. The Alhosn University will accept 300 students this September and is supported by Abu Dhabi Holding.

UAE denies teacher age limit

UAE officials have denied that there is any law that says expatriate teachers serving more than 25 years must be sacked, reported Gulf News. They said such a policy was carried out in 2002/3 and 2003/4 but there was no law as such and the policy had not been followed this year.

Police Academy, 119 graduate

Last week at total of 119 police officers, personnel and female police officers graduated from the Dubai Police Academy and recieved their certificates at four separate ceremonies. There were 68 police officers, 29 personnel and 22 female police officers.
