ETA's Star International School with 21 classrooms for 520 children is scheduled to open in the first week of September in the Al Twar Area, Dubai. This is the first of the three forthcoming schools. ETA Star Schools, part of the ETA Ascon Group has joined forces with Nord Anglia, the largest private education providers in the UK to launch Star International Schools in the UAE. A second school is scheduled to open in 2006 and the third in 2007.

The Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority is focusing on certain strategic investment sectors including education, Sagia Governor Amr Al Dabbagh told senior representatives of UK and US educational institutions in London last week, according to Arab News.
Dubai Crown Prince General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has issued a decree to create the Dubai Education Council under the chairmanship of Ahmed bin Bayyat, director-general of the Tecom free zone. The council is charged with development and improvement of the Dubai education sector.

The Citigroup Foundation is now supporting the American University of Beirut's scholarship programme to the tune of $125,000, after it added another $25,000 to the original pledge. Proceeds will be used to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students at the Suliman S Olayan School of Business.

The UAE Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Dr Ali bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi, has questioned whether Tanmia, the country's human resource authority, is effectively recruiting nationals, reported WAM. He said up until the end of 2004 the authority had recruited just 3,100 UAE nationals, and called upon the government and private sectors to limit requests for expatriate workers.

Forty UAE nationals have graduated from a Business English course run by the British Council for Tanmia, the National Human Resource Development & Employment Authority, and sponsored by Belhasa International. The Gulf Medical College Ajman has received the go-ahead from the Ministry of Education for its Bachelor of Physiotherapy course. The college is offering 25 places for students of all nationalities. The course runs over four years comprising three and a half years of course work followed by six months of internship training.
