Korean studies at JU

The University of Jordan's Language Centre has opened a Korean Studies unit aimed at introducing students to Korean culture. The centre stocks books on Korean history, music and language, with some translated into Arabic. The facility was financed and fully equipped by LG Electronics, and will exhibit the latest LG technologies and digital products.

ADU gets new campus

UAE-based Al Meraikhi General Contracting will build a new campus at Abu Dhabi University at a cost of $35.4m. The main building will have a 630-seat auditorium, 16 laboratories, 54 classrooms, a food court and a medical clinic. A wireless LAN system will be connected throughout the building.

Alwaleed promotes Islamic studies

Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal has donated $40m to Harvard and Georgetown universities in the US to expand their Islamic studies programmes, according to an AP report. The universities say the funds will be used to increase the size of the faculty and offer more scholarships.

Islamic finance education centre

Bahrain has lauched a centre for Islamic finance education to start operation in January, with the support of the Bahrain Monetary Agency. Its degree programmes will create a new generation of professionally and technically qualified Islamic bankers, said a statement.

RAK, British American University

The $200m British American University in Ras Al Khaimah is to open its doors next month. The new university will have 13 colleges and has obtained full accredition from the local and federal authorities. It will offer courses in medicine, engineering, civil aviation and law.

BUiD, Masters scholarships

The British University in Dubai is offering two scholarships worth $10,982 for its Masters of Science in Project Management, and Environmental Design of Buildings degrees. Etisalat Sudan academy

Etisalat has opened a new academy in Khartoum, as a subsidiary of Canar Telecommunications Company. It aims to train both public and private sector employees, as well as graduates from different specialties. Several international certification programmes will be available.

Shell Intilaaqah grants

Shell has awarded grants of $5,000 to each of four winners of its Intilaaqah programme, which promotes the best young Arab business entrepreneurs in the Middle East. The winners came from Oman, Egypt and the UAE.

Youngest Arab university student

A 12-year-old Palestinian girl is taking up a place at Weill Cornell University in Qatar to study medicine, becoming the youngest Arab to go to university, according to Gulf News. Iqbal Mohammad Al Asa'ad completed two to three years of school in one year.

AUS Asia business tour

A group of 18 students from the Business School at the American University Sharjah studied business practices of some of Asia's biggest companies on a recent study tour of Hong Kong and Japan. The students met with HSBC executives and management of Disneyland Hong Kong, as well as visiting Nissan, Fujitsu Siemens, and the Mitsubishi headquarters in Japan where they were briefed about the plans for the Dubai light rail system.

e-biz challenge, 66 teams

The Zayed University e-biz challenge, now in its fourth year has registered a record 66 teams since its launch on September 24, a 180% increase on last year. The challenge has visited 40 campuses to increase awareness and participation by students throughout the GCC region. The roadshows have allowed the e-biz challenge team to meet, distribute and talk to students and faculty directly face-to-face.

MBS launches new MBAs

Manchester Business School Worldwide, the international arm of MBS, will attend the MBA Fair in Dubai tomorrow, where it will launch three distance learning MBA programmes which will be offered in the region from January 2006, via a new Dubai centre. The School will also announce details of the 10 MBA scholarships available to students, which will cover 25% of fees.

Democracy in UAE education

The principles of democracy are to be taught in UAE schools from Grade One starting next year, officials told Gulf News. Students are to learn the skills of debate and methods of modern parliaments. This follows news of the first direct elections to be held in the UAE.

Fashion shows banned

The Kerala state board schools in the UAE have banned fashion shows and dances to safeguard children from paedophiles, said Kerala education minister E.T. Mohammad Basheer. He told Gulf News that a notice had been sent to the 14 state board schools in the UAE.
