The World Bank has approved a $100m loan to Iraq to help boost enrollment and ease overcrowding in schools. The credit is part of $500m in previously announced aid, and will finance the construction of 82 primary and secondary schools and support educational reforms.

A total of 1,645 students from the UAE studied in the UK in the 2003-04 academic, an increase of 26% over the previous year, according to British Council figures. Also, the number of students travelling to the UK on student visas from Dubai increased by 18% for the period 1 April to 8 November 2005, compared to the same period last year, reported Gulf News.

Jordan's Saraya Aqaba is offering scholarships to ten high school students from Aqaba to pursue higher education studies for a career in the hospitality industry. The Saraya Scholarship Fund will cover university fees and expenses for four-year courses. Upon graduation, students will be employed for a set period at one of Saraya Aqaba's five-star hotels.

The UAE's Higher Colleges of Technology has signed an agreement with the University of Western Australia through which energy sector employees will be able to take masters degrees part-time. Under the deal, students will get remote access to the university's engineering faculty in Perth.

Eighteen of Gulf Air trainee engineers will spend 18 months training at the Australian Aviation complex in Brisbane, as part of the carrier's Gulf nationals engineering programme. The programme will fast track accreditation for the group of 11 Bahraini and seven Omani trainees.
General Electric is building a major new technology facility, the GE Technology and Learning Centre, at the Qatar Science & Technology Park. The centre will offer technical training for customers of GE's aviation and energy businesses in the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Asia. Construction will start in 2006 and the facility is expected to be fully operational in 2007.
The UAE University has launched a high-tech eRecruitment system in a bid to find the best qualified staff around the world, reported Gulf News. The website, www.uaeujobs.com is now online and is intended for the recruitment of professional staff only.
