US universities have experienced a decline in the number of enrollments from Middle East students due to perceptions about visa difficulties and increased local and international competition, according to a US consulate official cited in Emirates Today. A report published by the Institute of International Education said numbers from the region dropped 2% in 2005, after a 9% fall the previous year.
More than 100 leading education institutions from 10 countries gather in Abu Dhabi today for the start of Getex, the largest education fair in the Middle East. The exhibition will focus on higher education courses and run a range of workshops and seminars over the three days.

The British University in Dubai is researching speech characteristics of people with Down's syndrome in Arabic-speaking countries. Early results demonstrate similar trends in both Arabic-speaking and Western countries, but the use of speech therapy in the West is significantly more advanced, according to a statement.

The UAE's National Committee for Emergency Response to Bird Flu has proposed that schools should become centres to recieve patients in the event of an outbreak of the deadly virus. Officials told Gulf News this action would only be taken if hospitals and clinics could not cope.
