Etisalat, language training online

Etisalat has launched new foreign language courses on its eLearning portal, www.LearnOnline.ae, in partnership with Dubai based Image Systems. The Internet learning courses utilise the Auralog eLearning method Tell me More.

Qatar University, radical change

The Qatar University is undergoing a radical shake-up around the principles of autonomy, decentralisation and accountability, President Sheikha Abdullah Al Misnad told Gulf News. She said the project was a key factor in forming a new generation of Qatari nationals.

Top UAE students, special help

Top Grade 12 pupils in the UAE are to get special assistance in Al Ain, said officials. Boys and girls who score 90% or higher in mid-term examinations will be appraoched to participate in the scheme, with the aim of initially assisting 100 pupils.

Teachers in wage dispute

Teachers at an unnamed Pakistani school in Dubai have complained to the Ministry of Education that they are being paid less than their contract stipulates, reported Gulf News. Instead of being paid Dhs2,000 a month, they receive Dhs1,450-1,650. The school has 1,012 pupils.

The American University of Sharjah is to establish a centre to offer the Test of English as a Foreign Language, and has signed an agreement with America Mideast Educational and Training Services to hold the examinations on its campus.

Pupils moved from unsafe schools

UAE school pupils were evacuated from seven public schools in Al Ain after the buildings were declared unsafe, reported Gulf News. The action was taken after a report by a technical committee. The pupils have been relocated to other government schools in the city.

Etisalat's eCompany has introduced new foreign language courses on its portal www.LearnOnline.ae, in partnership with Image Systems. The programme has been launched with the Auralog eLearning method TMM. Courses are available for English, Spanish, German, Italian, French and Dutch.

UAE replaces old schools

Up to 46 old school buildings in the UAE are to be demolished and replaced, according to a report by the Ministry of Education cited in Gulf News. It said that more than $136m is needed to build replacement facilities. A total of 15 schools will be brought down in Ras Al Khaimah, nine in Fujairah, eight in Dubai, six in Sharjah, four in Ajman, and two in Umm Al Quwain.

Company to develop UAE education

Al Qudra Holding and Global Education Management Systems have formed a company called Gems-Al Qudra Education, to provide education management services to both the private and public education sectors in Abu Dhabi. Gems runs almost 60 international schools in the Middle East, North Africa, the UK and Europe, with 22 located in the UAE.

BUiD, maths in finance lecture

The British University in Dubai is holding a public lecture which will examine the latest developments in the finance world, and how high-tech mathematics is being used and misused to predict market movements. The lecture is being presented by London-based Cass Business School Professor of Banking and Finance, Roy Batchelor, on 17 October at 2.30pm.

Bahrain schools warned

Bahrain's private schools have been warned against flouting Islamic and traditional Arab values, following complaints by parents about the activities of some schools, reported Gulf Daily News. Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi said schools should consult relevant officials at the ministry before staging activities that may go against its rules. No further details were available.

Shell environment awards open

Shell has opened applications for its Better Environment Awards 2006, which encourages schools to develop projects that help preserve the environment. Projects will be short-listed for grants, and winning schools will be notified by the Ministry of Education by October 22. Grant winners will have until the end of March 2006 to submit completed projects.

RAK public schools open to expats

Ras Al Khaimah has opened up public schools to expatriate pupils for Grades 11 and 12, because there are no private schools in the emirate that offers these classes. Pupils whose parents work in the private sector will be charged an annual fee of $1,633.
