International scientists are meeting in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain for a UN-sponsored workshop on space science from 20-23 November. The workshop is being held to prepare for the International Heliophysical Year in 2007, and is designed to benefit scientists and engineers from developing nations.

The Dubai Education Council has introduced plans to attract major international primary and secondary schools to the emirate, reported Gulf News. Under the Dubai Schools initiative, international accreditation authorities will assess institutions before they can set up. Officials say more schools are needed to cope with an increase in the number of pupils looking for places in private schools.

Classes at Bahrain's Royal University for Women will commence October 15. The programmes that RUW will offer in its inaugural year include: The Q Experience - preparing students to meet RUW's international admission standards; Foundation in Art and Design; Bachelor of Education; Bachelor of Commerce; and Bachelor of Computing Science.
The Zayed University has signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi's Finance House to provide internships for third and fourth year students. The 10-week internship programmes will also give Zayed University students an advantage in securing jobs at the Finance House.

Global Education Management Systems will establish an American private school in Ajman, following the signing of an agreement with Ajman Crown Prince Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi. The school will have modern ICT suites, a swimming pool, sports hall and specialist teaching and learning areas. Due to open in September 2006, it will run classes from kindergarten to grade 6, and later up to grade 12.

The Dubai based Our Own High School has suspended a teacher for allegedly beating a pupil, reported Gulf News. The principal apologised to the whole school for the incident at an assembly. The Dubai Educational Zone is investigating the incident. Physical punishment is banned in UAE schools.

The UAE Ministry of Education said that schools in the UAE will begin classes at 8.30am and close by 2pm during the Holy Month of Ramadan, although some schools will start at 8am. School canteens will remain shut but lunch boxes are allowed. Breaks will be shortened from 30 to 15 minutes.
