The Sorbonne comes to AD

The Sorbonne University is opening a branch in Abu Dhabi. A temporary branch will be built in October, with permanent premises to be established in 2007. The university will run a six-month French language programme for non-French speakers wanting to take academic courses.

ZU 4th E-Biz Challenge

UAE-based Zayed University is running the fourth E-Biz Challenge to encourage IT innovation and leadership in GCC students. This year's competition includes an e-services category in cooperation with Dubai eGovernment, and a speech recognition voice portal in partnership with Emerging Technologies.

Microsoft teaches the teachers

Microsoft Arabia says that it has trained over 6,000 Saudi teachers to help develop their computer skills this year. It is part a wider four-year training programme which the company is running with the Ministry of Education to train 30,000 teachers. The company also qualified 150 IT supervisors for the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer certificate.

DSO trains in microelectronics

Dubai Silicon Oasis has opened a microelectronics training academy to help develop a skilled regional workforce in the discipline. The academy will run practical courses covering microelectronics and integrated circuit design, automation, manufacturing and related technologies.

UKS mobile learning

Universal Knowledge Solutions will exhibit its range of ICDL delivery methods at Gitex 2005, highlighting ICDL content on mobiles which it says has emerged as the new revolution in learning. UKS will also demonstrate its mobile learning for the visually impaired.

Qatar helps Iraq education

A Doha-based group has given $1.6m worth of aid to Iraq so that universities can buy equipment for scientific and laboratory studies. The group was set up two years ago by Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned with a $15m donation to help rebuild Iraq's higher education system.

Cultural links through website

The UAE's Zayed University and Scotland's Al Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic studies have developed a website which is designed to enhance cultural ties between the countries, reported Gulf News. The launch coincided with a trip by students to the Al Maktoum Institute for a three-week programme on multiculturalism and leadership.

BUiD, first anniversiary

The British University in Dubai held a formal reception at Knowledge Village to celebrate its first anniversary as the Middle East's first postgraduate research-based university. All of the university's masters' programmes are accredited by the UAE's Ministry of Education and future plans include a Masters in Finance and Banking and PhDs in Project Management, Education and Informatics.

Global Education Management Systems is opening an American private school in Ajman for the school year starting September 2006. The school will initially operate from kindergarten to grade 6, and eventually up to grade 12.

Executive training at DSG

The Dubai School of Government is running a three-day executive training programme with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Singapore, as part of an agreement with the Mohammad bin Rashid Programme for Leadership Development. The programme is designed for government executives and heads of departments.

Sabic banks on local youth

Sabic is sending 100 Saudi national students to study at universities in the US and Canada in the first phase of its scholarship programme. The scheme is part of the industrial giant's plans to fill technical, managerial and marketing positions in the company for the next 15 years.

Study in Australia

IDP Education Australia is holding information sessions in the UAE to outline courses being offered by Australian universities and educational institutes for students who want to study in Australia. Sessions are being held in Abu Dhabi on 22 September at the Sheraton Hotel and in Dubai at the Knowledge Village Conference Centre, from 5pm-9pm.

PSUT courts German high-tech

Jordan's Princess Sumaya University for Technology has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Germany's Otto-von-Guericke University. This MoU is the second of its kind for PSUT with a German high-tech university in less than a month. The first MoU was with Darmstadt University of Technology.

AUD expels 65 students

The American University of Dubai has expelled 65 students that it found were not up to its strict requirements, said officials. This was a similar number to those expelled last year. The AUD recently celebrated its tenth anniversary and the admission of 620 students.

GEMS studies IB

GEMS has held a symposium on the International Baccalaureate programme in Dubai. The talks were held under the patronage of Minister of Education Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan and addressed the growing interest in the IB programme over primary, middle and secondary school years in the UAE.
