DGCX pre-opening training

The Dubai Gold & Commodities Exchange is running a training programme for members in the lead up to its November 2005 opening. Programmes will be conducted by the DGCX training department at Emaar Business Park to familiarise members with trading in electronic commodities derivatives markets.

Students ignore US, UK

An OECD report published this week shows that less international students are choosing to study in the US and UK. US campuses reported decreases of 10-37% in students from the Gulf States since September 11, 2001, while the UK's market share fell 2% to 13.5% among OECD countries in 2003.

AD, Online Trading Academy

The US based Online Trading Academy has established its second Middle East branch in Abu Dhabi, and plans to expand to Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Officials said the OTA mission was to deliver comprehensive financial education in online trading strategies and tools.

DLC signs IT training deal

The Dubai Ladies Club has signed the Sheikh Mohommad bin Rashid Al Maktoum IT Education Project to provide IT training courses for ladies. A computer laboratory has been established at the club for the courses which start on November 12.

58% positive on UAE education

Some 58% of respondents to a YouGov/Gulf News opinion poll said that UAE education was either very good or good, and 68% said that they would prefer to send their child to a private school within the UAE for schooling. The quality of teaching in the UAE was rated good or very good by 74% of respondents.

An MBA degree from the University of Wales, UK is now offered by The International College. The two year online MBA degree with specialist tracks in Marketing, Finance and HRM is offered by THINC, an institution incorporated in the UK, with regional offices in Mumbai, India and a Middle East Marketing office in Dubai.

AUS raises test entry levels

The American University of Sharjah has raised its admission standards from a high school minimum average of 70% to 80% and TOEFL from 173 to 180 points. Officials said the university wanted to focus on recruiting quality students and to reduce numbers which are above capacity.

Bac forum for Dubai parents

AD, new Education Council

Abu Dhabi has issued a decree establishing the Abu Dhabi Education Council to coordinate with the Ministry of Education in drawing up the emirate's education plan, reported Wam. The council is also to make recommendations for training and the improvement of standards.

GEMS school for Ajman

Ajman Crown Prince Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi has signed an agreement with Global Education Management Systems to establish an American private school in the emirate that will start operations in September 2006. The school will initially operate from Kindergarten to Grade 6 and eventually up to Grade 12.

New DIA opens its doors

The new Dubai International Academy today held an open house with school tours for both parents and children. The first day of school was attended by nearly 1,500 people, including parents and students. The school is located at Emirates Hills and operates withing the framework of the Geneva-based International Baccalaureate Organisation.

GEMS applies for the Bac

GEMS has applied to the International Baccalaureate Organisation for approval to include the IB in some upcoming schools. The IBO offers three programmes to suit different age groups. However, the most important stage is the IB Diploma, which students undergo during the final two years of their schooling before joining university.

Arabic needed for tertiary study

UAE school students must sit a unified Arabic language examination to pursue higher education in the country, Ministry of Education Undersecretary Dr Jamal Mohammad Al Muheri told reporters. He said students who do not sit the exam will not have school certificates attested to by the ministry.
