An official at the Ras Al Khaimah Educational Zone has said that private schools should appoint resident licensed nurses to provide medical support to pupils, reported Gulf News. Salem Saif Al Jaber, who heads the Private Education department, said that schools needed to recruit nurses in order to have their own licences renewed. He also recommended that schools appoint a resident physician or sign up with a clinic or hospital.

Over 40 children with special educational needs are unable to get places at a Dubai school due to a lack of facilities and are stuck on a waiting list, reported Gulf News. An official at the Al Noor Training Centre for Children with Special Needs said that the children have to make do with twice weekly programmes, although they urgently need full-time places in order to receive the appropriate support.

The UAE is to introduce a federal law to fight human trafficking and to protect children against abuse and exploitation, including working as camel jockeys, reported Gulf News. The UAE has now succeeded in stopping the practice and its progress has been praised by Unicef, which has been supporting the country in its efforts. Jordan's Princess Sumaya University for Technology has doubled its enrollments for the 2006-07 academic year. The university has added three new courses in computer graphics and animation, management information systems, and communications engineering.
English will be taught at two government kindergartens as part of an experiment, reported Gulf News. The lessons could be introduced to all kindergartens in the country after a review at the end of the current school year.

Saudi Arabia has formed an $80m private company in order to set up modern training cities, reported Arab News. The company's capital could increase to $533m in the future and the venture has already received initial approval from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The first city should be operational by 2008, while 23 are planned by 2040.

A teacher at the centre of a cheating allegation has been sacked from his post at the Our Own English High School in Fujairah and will soon leave the country, reported Gulf News. The teacher told an inquiry that he altered 16 papers after students had concluded a biology exam. An investigation was held after the University of Cambridge International Examinations cancelled the results due to evidence of exam malpractice.

Bits-Pilani, a Dubai based Indian educational institute, yesterday expelled one student and suspended another for a year after an investigation into the alleged harassment of junior pupils, reported Gulf News. Bits-Pilani had temporarily suspended 12 students as a result of an incident that occurred on September 5. Both of the students punished are in the third year; two further students have been threatened with suspension if their behaviour doesn't improve.

Qatar University has signed a $31.3m contract with Shannon Trading and Contracting Company to build classrooms and a food court at the female part of the campus. It is the first phase of the university's redevelopment masterplan for the construction of five new buildings, including a research centre and library.
Ras Al Khaimah Educational Zone has been hit with protests by teachers and parents over an illustration carried in a Year 9 textbook depicting an "extinct UAE national in a museum", Gulf news reported. The illustration was supposed to be a lesson in demographics, showing nationals will one day be overwhelmed to the point of extinction.
