French language students who join courses at Dubai's Alliance Francaise could win a trip to Paris, reported Gulf News. Students who sign up for classes this September stand a chance of winning the prize, courtesy of Air France. Morning lessons are held for women, afternoon classes are available for children and evening sessions are open to all; the prize draw will be held on September 17 between 7-8pm.

Saudi Arabia has offered to pay state school fees for all of Lebanon's students for the coming year, according to the official news agency SPA. Saudi's ambassador to Lebanon, Abdel Aziz Khuja, informed Prime Minister Fuad Siniora on Wednesday of King Abdullah's offer.

Unskilled labourers wanting to work in the UAE will in future need basic English language skills before being granted a visa, Minster of Labour Dr Ali Bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi told Gulf News. The requirement is mainly directed at labourers from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, and will not apply to workers from Arab countries. No time frame for its enforcement has been given.

The university has put up ten scholarships for two of its Masters programmes; four in its MSc in airport planning and management, and six in a MSc in aerospace vehicle design.

The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management, part of Jumeirah Group, has revealed plans for a major extension of its campus. Construction is already underway, with a scheduled opening set for early 2007. The campus is getting more classrooms, two auditoriums and a learning resource centre.

Qtel is offering scholarships to employees to study in South Korea, in a tie-up with Seoul National University and the Information and Communication University, according to The Peninsula. Two employees have been awarded scholarships in the first issue to pursue IT-related Masters programmes.
The UAE's Higher Colleges of Technology will accept an additional 1,550 students this academic year, following a direction by Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, reported Gulf News. More resources have been allocated to accommodate the extra students, who had missed out on places due to budgetary constraints.

Zayed E-Book, a member of Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for Young Business Leaders, has introduced an electronic school book project. Promoters say the initiative will help UAE high school students take up digital learning. Developed on a flash memory disk, it will contain the grade 12 curriculum for physics, chemistry, biology, maths, and Arabic and English languages.

The Dubai Educational District has been hit by the sudden resignation of 17 school teachers and administrators, just as the new academic year gets underway, reported Gulf News. Some schools have had to combine classes until replacements can be found. Resignations came from mainly UAE nationals who had worked for decades in the sector, said director Khalifa Bin Faris.

The Qatar Science and Technology Park has unveiled a new $500,000 grant programme that will help researchers move their innovations from the laboratory to the marketplace. Applicants for the QSTP Proof of Concept Fund can be universities, government agencies and small companies that are located in Qatar or are willing to undertake the project in Qatar. Grants can be used to build prototypes, conduct market research and protect intellectual property.
Knowledge Horizon has recently signed an agreement with the University of Cambridge International Examinations to offer professional qualifications online in the Middle East and North Africa, Iran, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and East Mediterranean countries. Target Management Consulting and Training in Oman and the Shaal Institute in Kuwait are now set to link up with Knowledge Horizon, as attached centres, and both will be offering CIE diplomas.

The University of Jordan has established seven new graduate studies programmes, reported the Jordan Times. The subjects covered are the management of desert areas, regional and urban planning, parliamentary studies, information systems, music education, local development and accounting. The university is also offering a higher diploma in music education.
Today marks the start of a new academic year in the UAE and 600,000 pupils are due back at 1,400 public and private schools, reported Gulf News. In Abu Dhabi, 60,000 students returned to school today, while in Dubai, it was 124,000. The UAE's Minister of Education, Dr Hanif Hassan, said that he hopes this academic year will bring developments to schools' curricula, better results and improved teaching methodologies.
