TKM is a publicly funded economic development initiative that focuses on the creation and expansion of science and technology start-up companies. TKM's mentors provide help and guidance to the fledging companies.
The Dubai Financial Market has concluded its annual summer training programme which targeted UAE Nationals studying in schools, colleges and universities. The two month programme was designed to provide a rounded view of the functioning of the stock market, the importance of getting companies, bonds and other securities listed on the DFM and the overall contribution of the bourse to the UAE economy.

Jordan's Yarmouk University, located in the northern town of Irbid, has signed an agreement with the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the US to enhance cultural and scientific cooperation, reported the Jordan Times. Joint events will be held under the agreement, in addition to the exchange of scientific knowledge and research.
The UAE's Minister of Education Dr Hanif Hassan has said that he wants government schools to take on more responsibility and rely less on central government involvement in decision making, reported Gulf News. The Minister wants school principals and teachers to decide finances and regulations within individual institutions. The move is part of a plan to raise standards in government schools which Dr Hassan described as being 'sad'.

Organisers of Gulf Pack and Gulf Print trade fairs have announced details of a competition for students studying graphics and packaging design. Students at universities and colleges in the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan and Lebanon have been invited to take part. Prizes will be awarded in eight categories at Gulf Pack and Gulf Print in Dubai 2 - 5 April 2007.

The UAE University is following a ten point plan for the coming academic year, which requires its colleges focus on a commitment to international standards, Minister of Higher Education Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan told teachers. The minister, who is also chancellor of the university, said the UAEU links its programmes closely to the requirements of the labour market, making graduates leaders in every area of UAE life, Gulf News reported.

Around 25 private schools in the UAE have been violating labour laws by employing teachers without obtaining labour cards for them, according to Gulf News. The problem mainly arises when schools employ teachers who are in the country on their father's or husband's visa. Having a labour card guarantees a teacher's rights, said a senior official.

A UK-based university has been stopped from recruiting students in Bahrain because of its "historical" policy off not offering scholarships to GCC nationals, according to Gulf Daily News. The British Council cancelled all recruitment interviews for potential University of Greenwich candidates to investigate the matter. But the university does offer scholarships to nationals from Iran, Egypt and Jordan.
The Dubai Department of Civil Aviation's 2006 summer training programme has graduated 67 UAE nationals, according to Gulf News. Courses were designed to give trainees practical skills to help them with job prospects.

The Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre is to open the Manu Chhabria Arts Centre in September. Located at the Mall of the Emirates, the centre will offer space for contemporary and classical art, as well as providing facilities for music, performance art, pottery making, face modelling, sculpting in clay and jewellery design. It will also house the Centre for Musical Arts, the Lending Library and 16 classrooms or studios.

The programme, which lasted almost two months, involved on the job training and a series of courses in various fields of work at the DCA's different departments. UAE based students have mixed feelings about studying in the US following the recent incidents of racial profiling, reported Gulf News. The British University in Dubai is to hold an open day in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, August 27 to raise awareness of its Masters programmes and professional development courses. The University offers Masters programmes in subjects including information technology, education and finance and banking. BUiD's Masters programmes all have accreditation from the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Children's City, the Dubai-based interactive learning centre, is today, Saturday, taking part in the final day of the DSS Summer Family Fiesta at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. Visitors can enter a recreated Children's City area where children can make scientific toys, such as the first ever powered aeroplane, and create giant bubbles. The event opens at 12pm and ends this evening at 9pm.
