DIA places running out

Dubai International Academy says there are limited places left for some grades for the school year starting September 2006. The school offers a curriculum based on the International Baccalaureate programme to Grade 10. Registration can be made online, or by visiting the school at Emirates Hills between 9am and 1pm Saturday to Wednesday.

Saudi schools, more testing

Saudi's Ministry of Education is phasing out mid-term examinations for schools at all levels in favour of more frequent tests during the year, according to Arab News. Meanwhile, college entry grade point averages will now incorporate a cumulative performance score for the last two years of high school rather than just the senior year.

UAEU orientation week

The UAE University is holding a five-day orientation festival to help introduce incoming students to university life, Gulf News reported. The programme for the 2,300 new students is organised in partnership with Watani, a development body that focuses on enhancing national identity.

Tamkeen honours graduates

Tamkeen Centre, a Dubai-based organisation which rehabilitates and trains the visually impaired, recognised its top students for the last academic year at a ceremony organised with Nokia. The centre's director, Dr Abdullah Al Karam, stressed the importance of empowering visually impaired students with education.

Saudis train for travel jobs

A group of 250 Saudis will undergo a six-month training programme which will qualify them as travel agent clerks in the private sector, according to Arab News. The trainees won postions out of the more than 1,500 applicants who had applied for the aviation-based programme, being run by Management Training Centre.

UAE schools seek counsellors

The UAE Ministry of Education is looking to recruit more school counsellors, reported Gulf News. Four committees have been set up to interview 423 candidates, with the government looking to hire more than 200. The ministry wants every government school to have social counsellors and is aiming to achieve a ratio of one counsellor to every 250 children; interviews commence tomorrow.

Saudi art project for Lebanon

The House of Artists in Saudi Arabia has commenced a week long workshop dedicated to showing solidarity with the people of Lebanon, reported Arab News. The project, Lebanon in Artists Brushes, is open to the public at the Al Jamjoom Centre. The idea is for people to express their feelings about the recent conflict through the medium of paint.

Aspire students return

Students at the Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence are set to return for a new academic year this week. The academy's numbers will be boosted by successful participants from the 2006 talent identification programme as well as prospective scholarship students from developing countries around the world. Video game raises concerns

Psychiatrists and education professionals in the UAE are concerned about the imminent release of a new video game, Bully, in which a teenager must defend himself from bullies using a baseball bat, stink bombs and marbles, reported Gulf News. Dr Yousef Al Tijani, an Abu Dhabi based psychiatrist, said that he was worried the game advocated a violent solution to bullying. The game has received some criticism in the US.

YAL launches UAE initiatives

The UAE chapter of the Young Arab Leaders has announced a series of initiatives to assist the development of young graduates and students in the UAE. The Internship Initiative will offer hands-on work experience in large organisations, while the Scholarship Initiative will offer a fully paid scholarship at the American University in Dubai. Other initiatives focus on entrepreneurship, power and energy, networking and mentoring.

UAEU calls for student files

UAE University students who gained admission for the 2006-07 academic year are being advised to submit their files before 23 August 2006 to appear in placement tests, Gulf News reported. Placement tests assess students' levels of Arabic and English, maths and IT.

Anger over campus move

Students at the Mahe-Manipal Academy in Dubai are angry over plans to move the campus from Knowledge Village to the remote Academic City, according to 7Days. Academy director Dr B Ramjee says the move was forced by a lack of space in Knowledge Village. Students and staff are worried about longer commuting times, as well as the safety of driving through the remote area at night.

UAE doctors, specialist training

UAE national medical practitioners will have to undergo a four-year specialised training programme to " enhance their capabilities", Ministry of Defence official, Dr Abdul Ghaffar Abdul Ghaffor, told Gulf News. The Residency Programme will initially focus on surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, services that are in high demand in the country.

Knowledge Horizon, Rikaz deal

Knowledge Horizon has signed a co-operation agreement with Oman-based Rikaz Consultancy and Training. Rikaz will market and distribute training videos developed and produced by Knowledge Horizon across the country; the videos are in Arabic, with English subtitles. Rikaz has five branches located around the sultanate.
