Two UAE private schools have been fined for recruiting teachers without labour cards or Education Ministry permits, according to Khaleej Times. They are Al Maali International and Al Rawafed Private School.

Abu Dhabi University has launched 11 new undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. The new programmes have received accreditation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and include subjects such as Business Administration, Information Systems Technology, Public Relations and Communication, Computer Science, Teaching and Learning and Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

The UAE Government is to continue a joint partnership with Unicef for the rehabilitation and support of former child camel jockeys by revealing a further fund of Dh30 million. The project, which commenced in May 2005, has brought an end to the use of underage jockeys in camel racing and repatriated and rehabilitated more than 1,000 former jockeys. The scheme will now be extended to May 2009.

An anti-terrorism campaign targeting school children has been launched in the Mecca region, reported Arab News. The year long drive will be accompanied by lectures, radio programmes and meetings with security experts. The campaign is intended to help children avoid extremist ideologies and promote patriotism.
The UAE University has signed an agreement with the Harvard Medical School Dubai Centre Institute for Postgraduate Education and Research to enhance higher education options, especially in medical sciences. The arrangement will enable UAE University medical students and graduates to train at the Harvard Medical School, or its affiliated hospitals in Boston. Co-operation may include research, development, professional consultations, education and training programmes.

Eight hearing impaired pupils and four with Down's Syndrome will be placed in public schools next year as part of a drive to integrate special needs pupils, according to an official at the Ministry of Education cited by Gulf News. The pupils with Down's syndrome will be integrated into the Al Rabe'e kindergarten in Dubai, with the hearing impaired pupils joining classes the Al Fateh Public School in Abu Dhabi.

Al Ain's Horizon International Flight Academy has expanded its fleet with four new Robinson R44 helicopters and a fleet of fixed wing aircraft, reported Gulf News. The academy has acquired Cessna fixed wing training aircraft as well as a flight simulator. Horizon's fixed wing training will give trainees the chance to obtain a private pilot's licence, a commercial pilot's licence and an air transport pilot's licence.

Private schools operating from villas in the UAE will be shutdown by the end of the current academic year, the minister of education told Gulf News. Dr Hanif Hassan said schools in villas don't have a proper safety and education environment. There are around 140 private schools operating from villas in the country.

Oman's Sultan Qaboos University and the University of Arizona will hold a learning technology and mathematics conference in Muscat from 31 March to 2 April 2007. It will address reform in the maths curriculum and introducing classroom technologies. There will also be training workshops on maths for business decisions.
The Middle East Public Relations Association has set up a PR training college in Dubai. The MEPRA-ICCO College is a joint venture of MEPRA and the UK-based International Communications Consultancy Organisation. Courses are offered online and face-to-face for all levels of PR positions.

An adviser at Dubai's education ministry has been handed a three-year jail term for attempting to sell fake school certificates, Gulf News reported. The 45-year-old Jordanian was accused of offering a forged American curriculum certificate to a UAE national bearing the name of a Dubai-based school.

The National Bank of Dubai has opened a training academy to help prepare UAE nationals for careers in banking. The NBD Academy will run a programme for high school graduates in retail banking and operations, and an intensive 21-month graduate trainee programme for supervisory and managerial positions, NBD said in a statement.

GEMS Education has reached an agreement with Microsoft Gulf that will see the launch of learning gateways in GEMS Schools. The integrated framework will provide parents, students and teachers with access to online lessons and tutorials. The collaboration will be supported through Microsoft certified training for teachers and the installation of Microsoft certified ICT labs.

School inspectors working for the Dubai Education Zone have complained about their lack of benefits and status, reported Gulf News. A number told the Dubai based daily that as many as 34 inspectors work from one small room and are expected to share desks, while unqualified administrative staff or inexperienced newly qualified teachers can be hired as inspectors. The inspectors also receive no health insurance, transport or housing allowances.

Dubai's Department of Economic Development has launched a series of workshops for UAE national entrepreneurs that specifically address the prospects for small and medium enterprises in the UAE. Entitled the UAE Investor Project, the workshops will be held from December 10-14 at the City Season Hotel. Over 300 UAE nationals have already registered for the five day event.
