The Ministry of Education needs to appoint at least 90 counsellors in order to tackle increasing behavioural and learning problems of public school pupils, reported Gulf News. Sana Abdul Adim, a Psychological Welfare Supervisor at the Ministry of Education said budget constraints had prevented more counsellors being recruited and currently there is one counsellor for every five schools. The government launched a drive to recruit 200 counsellors in August.

The University of Wollongong in Dubai is organising open days in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain to familiarise students with its various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Saudi Arabia plans to send 10,000 students to the US this year to try and return cultural links to the levels before the World Trade Centre attacks, when 15 Saudis were among the 19 Arab terrorists who killed 3,000 people, Reuters reports. There are currently around 14,000 Saudi students in America. Britain has 6,000 Saudi students, up from 2,000 in 2001 and Canada has 6,000, many studying medicine.

The Abu Dhabi International Pearl Festival is to get underway on December 10, reported Gulf News. The 49 day event is being organised by the Abu Dhabi Culture and Heritage Authority in collaboration with the American Museum of National History, the National Museum of Bahrain, the Pearl Laboratory of Bahrain and the Museum of Oman. Pearls worth a total of $85m will feature in the festival.

The Ministry of Education has launched a plan to promote physical activity among schoolchildren, reported the local WAM news agency. The scheme called Al Haraka Baraka, or Movement is a Blessing, has been introduced in more than 30 primary schools and 11,500 children now have a daily exercise routine. Teachers will now receive training on nutrition.

Saudi's ministry of higher education has put in place a strategic plan to develop higher education and generally upgrade education standards in the country, the minister told delegates at a National Dialogue Forum.
