Dentist recalls Maktoum generosity

The first-ever UAE national to study dentistry, Dr. Mohammad Hamdan Al Shamsi, told Gulf News yesterday how he studied at the personal expense of the late Ruler of Dubai, Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who passed away last week. He attended Cairo University between 1968-1973.

UAE schools close until Jan 13

Private and public schools in the UAE will be closed until January 13, as a mark of respect for the passing of Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Examinations will also be postponed.

Getting university degrees certified in the UAE has become expensive and difficult, PROs told Gulf News. They complained that fees were up from Dhs50 to Dhs500, while the amount of information required on forms has become onerous.

The Signal e-Quiz 2006 gets underway in its fifth year on 3 January, according to organisers Dubaiquiz.com. The quiz is run in two age brackets: 8-12 years and 13-18 years; and has five categories. Prizes will be awarded in each category, with a grand online winner for juniors and seniors.

English texts simplified

English-language textbooks used in Saudi intermediate schools are to be revised, after it was found a recent re-write by local professionals proved too complicated for students and even some teachers. Mohammed Al Ahaydib of the Ministry of Education told Arab News that publishers would be asked to bring out revised editions.

ZU, Yale academic pact
