Scholarships for design students

Senior school pupils in the Middle East are being given the chance to win scholarships to the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar through a design competition, Gulf Daily news reported. Applicants are to submit pieces on what an ideal future would look like, under the "If it was up to me" design competition, sponsored by London-based Sasol Chevron. The best two entries will win scholarships.

Expats could get free education

Expatriates living in Abu Dhabi might be provided with free primary education, according to a senior government official quoted in Gulf News. Khaldoun Bin Mubarak, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Affairs Authority, told delegates at a leadership summit that the government is seriously considering the introduction of a free public education system for non-UAE nationals.

HSBC, equal opportunities

HSBC Middle East is developing an equal opportunity programme in partnership with Dubai's Takamul, through which people with special needs will be given the chance to obtain employment with the bank. Takamul is a Dubai Education Council initiative which aims to integrate fully into society people with special needs.

DAE University takes to the road

DAE University, the educational arm of Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, is taking to the road to showcase its aviation courses through GCC states. Open days will be held on 22 November in Doha, 27 November in Kuwait City, 28 November in Manama and 29 November in Muscat; followed by sessions on 5 and 6 December in Jeddah and Riyadh. Administrators will be on hand to discuss the university's postgraduate courses.

UOWD attracts more nationals

The University of Wollongong in Dubai says the number of UAE nationals taking its postgraduate courses has increased from 129 in 2002 to 402 in 2006. More UAE nationals are choosing to study at home because of a greater choice in courses and the improvement of local universities, said the dean of academic affairs, Dr Raed Awamleh.

Al Ghurair University in Dubai is working with Harvard University to set up a medical studies programme. A delegation from Harvard recently held preliminary discussions with the president of Al Ghurair. Talks are at an early stage.

Medical students in fee dispute

The Gulf Medical College Ajman is withholding results for final year medical students who have refused to pay an added fee, Gulf News reported. A Dhs5,000 Community Development Services fee was imposed at the start of the group's third year, with students now owing Dhs15,000. Students need results to do a mandatory one-year internship before graduating.

Effat hosts tech symposium

Effat College is to host the fifth annual Learning and Technology Symposium. The event wil take place at the Jeddah Hilton Hotel on January 13 and will conclude the next day at Effat College itself; the theme of this year's symposium is Digital Literacy: No Boundaries, No Limits. Effat College is the first private college for women in the kingdom.

Autism campaign in Dubai

The UAE Ministry of Education is to take part in an awareness drive about autism, according to the local WAM news agency. The collaboration with the Dubai Autism Centre aims to provide information to teachers, administrators and parents. Minister Dr Hanif Hassan said that there is a plan to integrate some autistic children into local schools.

Upon implementation, companies are able to link current actions to strategic goals.

UAE schools need improvement

A UAE government official has said that international standards need to be applied in the country's public and private schools, reported Gulf News. Abdullah Z'al, the Director of Minister's office for Technical Affairs, said this would reduce the number of complaints received from both parents and inspectors. He added many teachers do not possess teaching licences, while the services offered by some private schools do not justify their high fees.

Schools study traffic plan

Dubai schools might start lessons later to avoid peak-hour traffic, Emirates Today reports. Some pupils can spend up to two hours in the morning on buses on their way to school. Starting classes one hour later might help alleviate the problem, according to one school principal.

DIB signs for Qiyadi

Dubai Islamic Bank has signed an agreement with Emirates Institute of Banking and Financial Studies to develop national recruits through its Qiyadi programme. The scheme is designed to identify and develop leadership skills in UAE nationals, who would then be placed in senior positions with the bank.
