Cognos appoints regional trainer

Cognos has appointed regional partner Business Systems Group as an authorised trainer. BSG, distributors of business intelligence solutions, will become the first company in the Middle East able to deliver Cognos 8 Business Intelligence training courses.

Dubai staff training centre

Dubai Municipality has opened a $1m staff training centre to improve skills among its 10,000 staff. Acting director general Hussain Lootah said several fields would be covered, including technical and engineering. During an experimental period earlier this year, more than 400 training courses were conducted for around 6,000 employees.

Etisalat Academy in Syria

Etisalat Academy will introduce its EasyLearning programme in Syria, following the recent signing of an MoU with Syria's Ministry of Telecommunications and Technology. Training courses will be offered through Unlimited Horizons, the academy's partner in Syria.

UAE sessions for study in OZ

Australian educational institutes, through IDP Education Australia, will be outlining their course offerings in Dubai on 2 November and Abu Dhabi on 4 November. Dubai sessions take place at the Conference Centre Knowledge Village, Block 1, from 5pm-9pm. Sessions in Abu Dhabi take place at the Sheraton Hotel with the same timing.

Emaar offers OZ TAFE courses

Emaar Education, a subsidiary of Dubai-based developer Emaar Properties, will offer courses by an Australian provider of Technical and Further Education programmes, the company said in a statement. Singapore-based Raffles Campus, which is owned by Emaar, signed an agreement with Australia's Box Hill Institute of Technical and Further Education to provide programmes in all its campuses in Asia, the Mideaest and North Africa.

Corporate skills for UAE nationals

Pupils at the UAE's public school are to be taught corporate skills as part of the UAE Achievement Programme, reported Gulf News. The Minister of Education Dr Hanif Hassan said that the project would be introduced on a trial basis this year and fully implemented by next April. The aim is for students aged 14 and over to attend weekly sessions hosted by officials from private companies.

Dubal, courses for nationals

The Dubai Aluminium Company has launched two further apprentice programmes for UAE nationals. The two one year courses are the Pre-Employment Course Power Programme and Pre Employment Course Desalination Programme. On completion of the courses, the nationals will be offered full time positions as Assistant Power Operators and Assistant Desalination Operators.

Sharjah set for show

The second edition of the Education Show, organised by Expo Centre Sharjah with the support of the UAE Ministry of Education and the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and sponsored by the Emirates National Development Programme, will be held from October 30 until November 2. The event will host over 70 exhibitors including universities, colleges, computer schools, business schools, management training centres, language centres and aviation centres.

400,000 books for Lebanon

The UAE Initiative for Support and Reconstruction of Lebanon has commenced the donation of funds in order to provide textbooks and stationary for 400,000 students in Lebanon, according to the WAM news agency. Mohammed Al Rumaithi, who is co-ordinating the project, said the group was working with the Lebanese Ministry of Education to implement the project.

Al Rafaq school boost

The principal of a public school in Al Rafaq has informed the UAE Minister of Education, Dr Hanif Hassan, of the institution's poor facilities and infrastructure, reported Gulf News. The minister, on a tour of rural areas, was told the school could only accommodate children up to grade three, lacked laboratories and relied on donations. Dr Hassan promised additional classrooms to enable pupils to attend the school until grade five.

MBA scholarships at MBS

Manchester Business School Worldwide is offering regional scholarships for MBA programmes to mark the opening of its new centre for the Middle East at Dubai Knowledge Village. Scholarships cover 25% of tuition fees for courses starting January 2007, and are open to students resident in non-GCC countries.

More than 50 educational institutions from the UK will provide information about their courses at the Education UK Exhibition 2006, which is being organised by the British Council, Gulf News reports. The exhibition, which takes place in November, will be preceded by a series of free information sessions.

Full integration some way off

It will take 10 years for pupils with special needs to be fully integrated into mainstream UAE schools, according to a senior official quoted by Emirates Today. A lack of experience by teachers is cited as a major stumbling block. The stated aim of full integration is designed to give all UAE school students equal learning opportunities.

BUiD to offer doctorates

The British University in Dubai plans to introduce PhD courses from 2007, according to Emirates Today. The research-based postgraduate university, based in Knowledge Village, is currently having courses appraised. PhDs would be offered in education, project management and IT.

HCT-CERT, Solving deal

The UAE's Higher Colleges of Technology and the Centre of Excellence for Research and Training has signed an agreement with European management consultancy firm Solving International. The deal will enable both parties to work together on strategy and performance projects. Areas covered will include purchasing, logistics and supply chain, operations management and manufacturing.
